This domain represents world language course data that meet the needs of heritage or second language learners. Such courses were previously commonly referred to as "Foreign Language" courses. The program has adopted the term "World Languages" to reflect the reality that these languages are spoken by resident communities within the United States as well as others in other nations.
Wisconsin State Statutes require access to world language education beginning in grade 7. Enrollment and Roster data is used for year-to-year comparisons to capture changes in world language participation over time. Because world languages are an elective subject, this information is valuable both for districts and the State. This data is also used for comparisons at the national level. The numbers may be important for grant applications.
🚫 World Language Education is not expected from Choice schools.

5.0 | Sending the WL program for English Learners (ELs) Regression Test | English Learners are students who, per the HLS, have produced a positive response to be screened, could carry an ELP level of 1-5, as dependent on the results of the language proficiency screener. Any identified English Learner must have an LIEP association that indicates the primary means by which that student is learning English. A district may also indicate a secondary LIEP. Any English learner can also be enrolled in a world language course and should be reported as would any other student. There are not any WL course codes that specifically should or should not be used for ELs. World Language courses depends on the context in which an EL student is participating in the program. 7.0 | Sending the WL program for a non-English learner
| Never EL: a student has an ELP code 7. This student would never be assigned an LIEP association. Bilingual and dual language programs may serve as world language programs for students enrolled in those programs who are not English Learners (non-ELs). For example, a never-English learner enrolled in a district’s dual language program would then be reported using the WL codes.
